Is the Assessment Meaningful? A reflection on Objective Assessments

Image
When cooking traditional is usually the most valuable way to make sure the dish or baked goodies turn out perfect.  However, like with the world around us change can be very helpful and usually doesn’t take away the main details.  Education is following the same process like many things we experience in our world today.  Traditionally instructors would teach students various concepts related to a unit of learning and provide students with a large assessment at the end.  The assessments are usually high in point value and consist of various questions delivered on a Scantron sheet. Example of "I can" statements https://www.theartofed.com/2013/02/21/how-i-can-statements-can-work-for-you/ As we are continuously evolving to teaching our 21 st century students we must incorporate change how we assess these unique individuals.  Even our learning objectives are changing into “I can statements” which are written in student friendly language.  This new form of language shoul

Creating a Technology Infused Learning Environment

Image
Today we use technology for just about everything for finding the perfect recipe for creating that new dish for dinner or like I do every year to find a new cake idea to create for my children’s birthday.  I can spend hours sometimes without notice searching the Internet for recipes. If I run into problems I search blogs, videos or even chat rooms for ideas.  Technology is completely embedded in our lives and the world around us.  We now use technology as a life line system to personalize learning in education.  In today’s classrooms I use technology to teach and provide my students with the best current tech-infused resources to support my curriculum. A technology infused classroom will create avenues of learning that engages students to actively participate in their own learning.  Student will have the ability to work independently at a pace that is supportive to their way of learning.  They have the ability to collaborate with peers to become engaged and interact with the conte

Visual Literacy in the 21st Century Classroom

The 21 st century educator is aware of the ever changing trends in technology and what’s forthcoming in the future of education.  They will be well rounded with career exploration for their students and seek opportunities to prepare their students for global competition.  Therefore, 21 st century teaching strategies should encompass the same attributes.  Student learning diversity is a must to provide an educational experience that meets the needs of the world around them.  Instruction should tap into student’s interests and abilities to help them improve their chances of success in college and beyond.  Visual literacy strategies can help students better understand concepts as they use, create, interpret and evaluate images.  Recent 21 st century educational studies estimate that we gain more than half of our knowledge through visual texts (Krauth, 2008).  Students are inundated with multimedia on a daily basis.  Visual literacy plays a vital role in students becoming globally

A Recipe for great Instruction : Effective Instructional Strategies for teaching the 21st Century Student

Image
Like any good recipe there are key ingredients that can’t be overlooked or excluded.  Close your eyes and imagine your grandmothers best dessert that she makes for Thanksgiving for the past 20 years.  It’s a staple at the dinner table and everyone can’t wait to taste it because grandma’s a great baker.  Now imagine if she decided to add a new twist to her recipe and it changes the flavor.  Thanksgiving will probably never be the same or even worst grandma’s dessert may not be welcomed anymore. Teaching incorporates the same ingredients as your grandma’s dessert.  The key ingredients and outcome shouldn’t change because of something new.  However, that new improvement should only be an enhancement.  Technology is the new ingredient to teaching.  Teaching and learning strategies should blend when creating an enhancement to instruction when incorporating technology.  tutorsweb.com  graphic of effective teaching strategies To meet the needs of the 21 st century student edu

Welcome to a Sprinkle of Teaching & Touch of Tech

Hi everyone! I have over 14 years of teaching business education and technology to wonderful middle school children. They love to learn from me and I love to learn from them too! On a weekly basis my colleagues ask me for different ways to add a little pizzazz in their content with technology.  As a person that loves all things "tech" and cooking I want to use this space as place for educators to bring their appetite to brainstorm and share their technology recipes. I hope this blog adds that little extra sprinkle of technology integration you crave! Tyshonđź’•
